Nowadays many human resource managers think that, by giving each member of staff training in workplace safety, they have got everything they might need to prevent an incident. Realistically however, a basic education in safety legislation and risk asessment simply is not enough. You need to provide your staff with adequate supervision, not to mention provide the right safety gear and give them the opportunity to practice.

Every team must have an effective supervisor to watch over employee performance, yet this individual also needs to perform another purpose. Whomever you choose as the supervisor requires good communication skills, they should also think that safety training is essential. In addition to enforcing any relevant legislation, a supervisory role also includes maintaining employee performance. This is a difficult task. The supervisor is advised to possess a comprehensive understanding of the business and manufacturing operations as well as a high level of knowledge of safety regulations, the identification of risks, and emergency assistance techniques. It’s just not sufficient to send your staff on a health & safety course. To effectively spot a safety hazard they need to put their new-found knowledge into practise. Staff must know the best method of eradicating hazards and how to act when the worst happens. Not until these procedures become routine are workers properly trained. Training is in fact not enough if you don’t keep the necessary safety apparatus. If they are without items they need, or notice that supplies are not functioning properly only after a crisis has happened, even the most advanced training can’t help them. Regular maintanence of your equipment is fundamental. If you find your equipment isn’t in perfect condition, have it repaired or serviced as swiftly as possible. Your workforce must receive the right health & safety education, but in addition they also must have good quality equipment, scheduled practise drills, and a supervisor who can motivate your staff. When you implement these steps you will find the safety regulations become established in the culture of your business and no longer something troublesome for everyone to remember.
